They emerged from the dying embers of World War II, some venturing from attics and forests while the fighting continued elsewhere, others freed from Nazi camps by the advancing Allied armies. Merely months or even days after enduring life-shattering experiences, they told their story, recounting in Polish or Yiddish the brutal horror of what would come to be called the Holocaust.
